Grimes: Miss Anthropocene, Art Angel Turned Pageant Popstar

I’ll admit it. When it comes to Grimes, I get possessive. Like a disapproving father, nobody is good enough for my little girl, not even Elon Musk. Last year, she released a single called “We Appreciate Power” and I couldn’t get out of bed for a week. Could the Art Angel of the Indie Electro Pop kingdom be aligned with the corporate realm? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After many listens, I am relieved to say that Miss Anthropocene is another fine addition to the Grimes discography. She stays true to her cyberpunk Anime roots. While there is an atmosphere of airbrushed commercialism that permeates the album, it actually fits perfectly with the Grimes persona that is a glamorous, international, fashion robot. The album is a decided departure from the rebellious, counter culture chic of her previous work, but it still checks all the boxes.

Miss Anthropocene is a sexy, gothy dance parade. Not only does our heroine stay true to her artistic integrity, she maintains her voice despite the financial solubility of being partnered to a gajillionaire. There is a fatalistic undertow to most of these songs that is a striking narrative to their dystopian video counterparts, many of which have a pregnant Grimes front and center. “Delete Forever” looks very reminiscent of the FKA Twigs video, “Two Weeks”, with its super slow zoom out, but with more space explosions. She also made a video for “You’ll Miss Me When I’m Not Around” that just has a green screen so there a slew of versions that fans have made, from amorphous fire, to spiky vines, to Animal Crossing.

My favorite cuts are “Violence”, “4 AM” and “My Name Is Dark”. These tracks will give you a good introductory taste to wet your beak. If you have the time, Miss Anthropocene plays excellently from start to finish. 7.9 Stars
